Despite our desire to be healthy, we can only do so much. When we are hungry and tired, it takes a gigantic amount of motivation and energy to prevent ourselves from eating that cake or that cookies. It is in those moments of weakness where I pray for low carb snack alternatives right beside those chocolate bars and brownies. Egged on by all that temptation and a hunger that won't quit, I would end up straying from my diet. It's all very well to tell someone that they should just make sure they never get into that situation by always eating throughout the day and carrying food around with them, but it's simply unrealistic to expect that to happen!
It's not as simple as described to carry snacks around throughout the day as a quick fix when you feel hungry. You can hardly expect food that you've prepared for dinner or lunch to easily fit a small pouch or a pocket. The thought of carrying around a spoon and fork to eat them with isn't at all appealing either. There are lots and lots of great low carb recipes out there for low carb dieters to try, but unfortunately that doesn't translate too well into low carb snacks.
Snacks have to be ready to eat, no heating required, filling, easy to carry, and not messy. Of course they should also be tasty. People wouldn't want to eat something disgusting simply because they are easy to bring around. That is why there are so few low carb snacks. All those criteria have to be met, and it really isn't easy to do that.
What low carb snacks are available, then? There are of course some low carb snacks. For example, there are vegetables. You can even find ready-to-eat celery sticks in some stores. They are pretty easy to carry around with you. You can pop one into your mouth whenever you want. However it's not all that satisfying to eat because it doesn't fill you up well. I find myself wanting something else after eating celery sticks.
What are our other options then? Common low carb snacks include nuts. They are healthy and low in carbs. They come in a variety of favors, and you can even get them in mixed packets. Dried fruits are also often thrown into those mixed packets. The popularity of dried fruits and nuts has given rise to more variety packs. Brazil nuts and cashews and other exotic nuts and dried fruits can now be enjoyed as well. Many food manufacturers now take it upon themselves to improve the quality and taste of these nuts. Unfortunately, they do this by adding sugar to the mix thereby making them unhealthy. Be careful when buying nuts. Make sure the ingredients label says that there is no added sugar!
Finding healthy low carb snacks to munch on can be quite a chore. But it's definitely worth it. It will be able to keep you in line with your diet and prevent you from cheating. You will be nourished with all the nutrients you need as well as keep your energy levels high.
