Do Green Tea Anti-Aging Properties Exist

By Annette Bishop

As early as recorded history can tell us, tea has been the drink of choice for people looking for a flavorful and healthy beverage that can be consumed hot or cold. In the past ten years green tea has seen an explosion in worldwide popularity as green tea anti-aging properties have become a regular headline.

Indeed, since the drink was first discovered and began to be produced for sale in the marketplace, it has been met with a warm reception by nearly every region and culture of the world. Though many countries now produce their own, the leading exporters of dry green tea are China, Japan, Vietnam, and Indonesia.

The earliest record that mentions tea drinking as a regular and prescribed activity was written more than four thousand years ago in China where the plant became known for its health benefits. The 'Tea Classic' written during China's Tang Dynasty specifies how to properly brew and drink the beverage while a later Japanese work called the 'Book of Tea' described its myriad health benefits and which ailments it could help to cure.

Such speculation upon the proper methods of preparation has only grown over the course of history as individual cities, regions, and nations each develop their own way to consume the beverage. For some it is a matter of extracting flavor while for others the tea's regenerative properties are believed to be unlocked only by a certain sequence of steps.

As far as actual scientific investigation into the plant's potential for health benefit, numerous studies have concluded that it is the plant's high levels of polyphenols and antioxidants which suggest its historical classification as a remedy. Both have been linked to a number of health benefits that include both increased metabolism to help in losing weight and a lower rate of breast cancer for women who imbibe the drink regularly.

Despite that green tea anti-aging may be more a fountain of youth than a scientific fact, nonetheless one would be safe in the decision to drink it on a daily basis. Whether you can slow down or reverse the aging process is tentative, but green tea has undeniable health benefits that make it a smart choice for anyone who enjoys hot beverages.
