The capsulorhexis forceps are a type of special tool that is used in operations and procedures that are carried out in eye treatment, mainly in treatment of cataracts and their removal. The procedure is surgical and is carried out by an eye specialist after an assessment process in the degree and severity of cataracts which appear on the lens and impairs vision.
Cataracts are opaque growths that occur in the lens of a human eye. These cloudy growths may occur on the anterior or on the posterior of the lens and usually grow slowly but steadily until they cover the whole part and cause irreversible destruction if not treated in time.
Cataracts mainly occur in elderly people, this kind being known as senile cataract. It starts out as an opacity in a lens of an eye, followed by swelling, then finally shrinkage takes place leading to total loss of transparency which causes blindness. In children, it is known as congenital cataracts.
Cataracts have very easily recognizable symptoms. As it develops, a change of color will be observed in the eyes and as time goes by, the patient will suffer from cloudy vision. Clarity is lost as well as what is known as contract sensitivity. This means that the once vivid edges, shapes and outlines become blurred.
The causes of this condition are little understood, but some are known and people are advised accordingly. Ultraviolet light is a leading cause and exposing the eyes to it over a long time leads to a development of the condition. Ionizing radiation is also shown to cause this illness. Pre existing conditions such as diabetes and hypertension are also a risk factor.
In seeking treatment of this problem, the Capsulorhexis forceps are used since the cataracts must be manually removed from the lens and this can only be achieved if an invasive procedure is carried out where the eye is opened up and the material is removed. This is a fairly modern method of treatment which is simpler and not as invasive.
