The Primary Facts Concerning Breast Augmentation Surgery

By Gee Ray Osvaldo

Prosthesis are inserted under the breast or chest for the purpose of enhancing the bust size in a medical process known as breast augmentation surgery. This procedure may also be referred to as a boob job and is categorized as a cosmetic procedure. In cases where a patient has had a mastectomy, this practice is considered cosmetic reconstructive surgery. Women are the most common patients, but some men going through the process of gender reassignment may also have this done.

Implants have existed since the 1880s. But it was not until the 1950s and 1960s that breast augmentation became a popular cosmetic procedure. In modern times, it is a common procedure that is widely accepted in many societies.

It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of these surgeries are performed yearly. Most patients are between 20 and 40 years old. Sometimes parents pay for this surgery for their kids as part of a birthday or graduation gift. Fortunately, the occurrence of 13 to 19 year olds getting this procedure done is low compared to those over the age of 20 years old. Many doctors opt not to do this on people who are under 18 years, without parental consent. Still, the recommended age for people to undergo the augmentation process with silicone implants is at least 22 years old.

There are two prosthesis types used for breast implants: saline and silicone. The casting for these implants is the same but the liquids that fill the prosthesis are different. With silicone versions, the implant feels most natural, soft and smooth. These kinds are not likely to ripple. Saline types may be textured or smooth, and are more prone to rippling or rupturing. The feel is compared to that of water balloons. However, some people opt for saline because the price is less than silicone. There are cons and pros to both types, so patients should do thorough research and consult with their surgeon about what is best for their needs.

Often, patients choose the implant size with some input from the doctor. Most surgeons have water-filled bags on hand that patients can place in their bra to try out various size of implant. These bags are a close depiction of what the breast size will be like following the procedure, but results may change depending on the breast tissue already present.

One of the major steps in this process is choosing a doctor. There are many different physicians who have been trained in this practice and perform it on a daily basis. However, choosing the doctor that makes you feel most comfortable is important. Certified surgeons should be able to answer all questions presented by the patient and offer suggestions. Even still, a good doctor does not guarantee that the procedure will not come with risks.

Make sure to discuss medical history with the surgeon, as well as the surgery expectations. Medical history should include details of alcohol or drug use, medications and medical history of family. Many doctors will perform a basic exam of the patient before the surgery to make sure that they are in good condition.

Breast augmentation surgery costs are known to vary. Total costs are based on several factors, such as surgeon, facility charges, implant type, anesthesia fee, location and more. Do thorough research on the payment options, doctor and procedure itself.
