Shocked And Very Happy - Bamboo Yoga Mat Critique

By Ella Foster

It's very "tacky" and I have never had any problems with it slipping on hard surfaces, or with my hands or forearms slipping, even while damp with sweat. At 71 inches (that's 5 foot 11 inches), it's also a bit longer than most yoga mats, which makes it nice for when you are doing something like corpse pose.

I have been regularly practicing vinyasa and ashtanga yoga for 10+ years. My old mat wore out, and I decided to save money and break out this mat that my husband previously bought for himself & rarely used.

It's the same basic hygiene that makes one own, not share, an exercise mat. If you can afford it, do it. The one drawback is the fact that you get an arm workout lugging it to and from the yoga studio- it's heavy! As my second yoga mat, this has been great purchase.

After spending months borrowing my wife's Gaiam yoga mat, she surprised me with the Manduka BlackMatPRO for my birthday. When the hefty box arrived from Amazon, I knew immediately this mat was unlike any other mat. I absolutely love my Manduka. I bought this mat because my best friend pressured me into it!

I washed it as suggested, with a brush and soap, and let it dry in the sun for 2 days. It still has the slippery film on it, despite all that and using it about 6 times.

The only small problem I had with it was waiting for the film to wear off. I tried washing it off as the directions suggested but it only helped a little bit. From day one I've had to use a towel under my hands at the front of the mat to keep from collapsing in down dog. I've tried them all, your standard "sticky" mat, a Mysore rug, etc.

The only con is that this is a heavy mat, but if you know that when you're purchasing (and you should since it's listed above) it's no surprise. I wouldn't recommend schlepping this bad boy back and forth if you're walking far to your yoga studio!

The mat is just a little bit larger than my old one but it is firmer and gives me a good foundation for balance poses and great support for knees. It makes a huge difference in my practice. This is a must buy! Very durable for all of his activities and easy to roll up and put away.

The mat does not stretch and give in poses like the warrior poses, and it stays in place. The dense cushioning protects knees and hands but is not so soft that it interferes with balance. It's a little wider than my other mats and I like that a lot for some of the asanas I do. It has never slipped on the floor and I feel really safe and confident using it. Now I have something to stretch on as well as run in place on when I'm using EASA 2.0. I spent a lot of time reading reviews and even thought of using interlocking flooring for the room I work out in but I decided against that.
