Treatment to Clear Acne

By Betty Sanso

Acne is a menace. But it is not something that cannot be tackled. There are tons of acne skin care products around. We can classify acne skin care creams into 3 broad categories:

* Preventative or general acne skin care products

* Over-the-counter, specialized acne skin care creams

* On-prescription acne skin products.

The general acne skin care creams are the ones that are used as acne-prevention measure. These include cleansers, make-up removers and similar products that help stop acne. In the real sense, these acne skin products are just the ones that should anyway be part of your daily agenda. But some of these are far more oriented to act like an acne skin care cream. These acne skin creams act against the causes of acne e.g. Limiting the production of sebum/oil and stopping clogging of skin pores. Essentially, these acne skin creams stop the oil from getting trapped in pores and therefore hamper the growth of bacteria which can lead to acne. The general acne skin creams also include scrubbing products like skin peels. These work towards removing dead epidermal cells, hence reducing the possibility of pore-clogging and bacteria development.

Then there are specialised acne skin care products that are available OTC i.e. Without the need of a prescription. These include products like disappearing creams which extract the additional oil from the skin. Many of these acne skin care products are primarily based on benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid, both of which are the enemies of bacteria (and therefore acne). You need to begin with a product that has lower density of benzoyl peroxide (e.g. 5%) and see how your skin reacts to it. Alpha-hydroxy-acid based moisturising lotions are also preferred as acne skin products. You might have to try a few , before you zero-in on the acne skin product that is effective for you. If nothing seems to work, you should contact a skin specialist.

On-prescription acne skin products are the ones that are prescribed by a skin specialist. This will include ointments that can be applied on the affected area or oral antibiotics or simply any topical treatment. Skin specialist could also suggest a minor procedure to remove the contents of pustules. Nonetheless never try to squeeze or do it by yourself, it can cause long-term damage of your skin. Your health practitioner could also prescribe a hormone-based treatment (since hormonally-based changes are also known to cause acne). Such acne skin care creams are known to be particularly effective in some cases.
