Custom Prosthetics Reduce Pain And Encourage Activity

By Cheri Knowles

While donated and stock units are essential, the use of custom prosthetics can create a higher quality of life. There is a lot less pain, reduced irritation, and less of a chance of infection with customized pieces. It has been proven on numerous occasions that the use of customized limbs lead to a better quality of life.

The main idea of customization is to create a fit that is as close to perfect as possible. With the proper shaping and sizing, the motion and use of the limb are more natural. This makes it easier to manipulate or control the piece.

The addition of robotics, especially in arm units, allows the patient to operate more functionally. Without a good fit the robotics are difficult to control and can often lead to accidents or embarrassing situations. A pincher grasp much be developed for the patient.

Getting the proper fit can take time and require numerous measurement sessions. A prototype is often used as the first unit so that the patient can test it and report discomfort. If there is pain, chafing, or other irritation the area can be reshaped.

Remaining active and independent often means that you need a specialized piece. Waterproof or locking units are typically great for all weather and outdoor activities. The proper fit helps eliminate issues like chafing and pinching, which in turn can lead to infection. A physician should be keeping tabs on the condition of the skin, especially during the early stages of fitting. If the affected limb does not have full sensation capabilities severe infection can develop and become life threatening.

Fortunately, Custom Prosthetics are not nearly as expensive as they once were. Lowered cost of materials, better manufacturing techniques, and a greater demand has helped to keep the cost down. Anyone who wishes to be as fully active as possible should consider nothing other than customization. Without pain or infection there is a much greater possibility for the patient to recover more completely.
