When you use shampoo, do you give it a thought? Other than cleaning your hair and scalp, what does it do? Many shampoos promise thicker manes, while others will give you shiny, sleek hair, and others say you can havebest at home hair color. But what's the real story behind what goes into shampoo?

Many different kinds of ingredients are listed on the back of shampoo bottles, and people rarely look at them. Research has shown that some mainstream shampoos have harmful chemicals that pose a risk to your health, such as eye irritation, skin irritation and rashes, memory loss, hair loss and potentially cancer.

Below are common ingredients that can cause you harm: Fragrances and scents contain harmful chemicals. These may give you and others around you headaches, and even rashes. Coughing and vomiting can be a reaction. Propylene glycol can cause allergies to flare up. Look for this ingredient in most popular toothpastes as well. Sodium lauryl sulfate can cause asthma attacks to happen. This one can damage hair follicles and irritate your eyes painfully. Diethanolamine can lead to a diagnosis of liver or kidney cancer. Its toxicity can be dangerous to your brain and mental activity.

Additionally, researchers at the National Institutes of Health found that shampoos can cause damage in the nervous system. Chemicals in the shampoo prevent neurons from communicating, meaning the network slows down. This delay can prevent normal brain activity. Perhaps you are wondering how shampoo with these kinds of ingredients could even be approved to be on the market. Regulatory authorities spend the majority of their time investigating prescription medicines instead of shampoo.

There are very few regulations for shampoo manufacturers on what they can and cannot use as an ingredient in shampoo. From the market demands for shampoos that thicken hair to hair color treated shampoos, they make what will do those things regardless of consequences, even cancer-related ingredients. The best way to avoid this health issues is to read the ingredients label of your shampoo and avoid the dangerous ingredients listed above.
