Hair, Ringlets, Locks And Curls: How Do You Feel About Your Mane Identity?

By Kasey P. Wood

We all have one, whether our natural hair is something we like or if we wear hair extensions or hair wigs to create a different look. The end result is that hair and choice of hairstyle is an intensely personal thing. Do you identify with this characterization?

There are countless examples of why your hair and how well you like your hairstyle have a direct influence on your self-esteem. In our culture, we are judged by how we look on the outside, including our manes (e.g., tresses, curls, ringlets, and hairstyles), so we thought we'd take a closer look at some hair-raising examples of the importance of hair.

Disease: Many patients suffering with alopecia (a hair-loss condition) or the consequences of chemotherapy know how harshly society can judge, all too well. Many suffering from these conditions may opt for full hairpieces instead of using hair extensions.

Age: The older we get, it is inevitable; we all, someday, will begin to lose our hair.

Societal Expectations: There are a lot of societies where woman are expected to wear their hair in certain styles, likewise for the men. Ancient records gives us a clear indication of these expectations. Did you know that ancient Egyptian men, who were of a certain social status, were the ones who wore expensive hairpieces and wigs? Furthermore, your hairstyle was based on your gender, age or status in society. Luckily, we have the freedom of choice in modern times.

Lastly, Vanity or Pride: We all try to look our best, and this is the primary motive for choice of hairstyle.

For all of these reasons, the hair industry is a successful international business. For instance, the African-American community has a longstanding tradition of creating elaborate hair design where the wearer, through the aid of hair extensions or otherwise, dons a hairstyle, in some instances, worthy of art.

Apart from the importance of hair in specific cultures, those who have curly hair want it to be straight; those who have brown hair want it to be blonde, and those with short hair want it to be long, or vice versa. Clearly, everybody has a hair-do that makes him or her feel unique.

So, do you know your mane identity? We would like you to share your personal hairstyle story with us. Are hair extensions to your liking, or do you prefer other types of hairpieces? Do you drastically change the color of your hair on a frequent basis? Whether you go for the drastic or the simple, the hairpiece or have a collection of hair wigs, we say to each hair own. Besides, isn't finding the perfect hairstyle that suits both your face and fashion style the mane idea?
