By Jake Alexandre

Male and female have distinct characteristics from each other. Having a muscular body, broad jaw and strong chest in men is considered a sign of masculinity. As far as females are concerned a sleek body and large breasts are considered to be the characteristics of sexy women. But the question is what causes such major differences in the visible characteristics of both sexes. The answer is hormones, namely testosterone and estrogen. While both hormones are present in male and females but the quantities vary significantly . While testosterone is the male sex hormone, estrogen is the principal female hormone. These hormones give each of the sex their physical characteristics and play a major role in the development of sex and reproductive organs.

Progesterone is another female hormone which is produced by the body to counter the effects of estrogen thereby keeping estrogen levels controlled. Testosterone is also produced in female body but in very low quantities, compared to males. Practically estrogen can be called the negative testosterone. Its primary function is reversing the effects of testosterone on human body. Secondary functions of estrogen are fat storage, decreasing muscle mass and increasing libido in women.

There are specific circumstances which only women go through, like pregnancy and menstrual cycle. Therefore women tend to have a more risk, of hormonal imbalance. Female hormones drop significantly after a woman delivers a child or when she is going through her menstrual cycle. This puts her at a greater risk to ailments like osteoporosis and heart failure.

A hormone replacement therapy is prescribed to females with hormone deficiencies so other complications could be prevented. One of the main reasons of infertility in both males and females is the low hormone production. Lack of female hormones can cause problems with ovaries and uterus, which are the main reproductive organs of female gender. Without proper function of ovaries a women cannot conceive a child. The quality of ovarian eggs also depends on the estrogen levels in a female.

Some of the symptoms experienced during female hormone deficiency are fatigue, low sex drive, slow metabolism, weight loss, and polyuria. Symptoms depend on the level of problem and characteristics of the patient. A woman should try to know her body and visit a doctor regularly for checkup, so a problem is detected at an early stage and treated accordingly.
