Lower Back Pain Causes and Prevention

By Ronnie Rivera

Back pain can have a massive impact on our life, preventing us from working, playing or doing the basic functions of everyday life. Most of us will suffer from this at least once in our life, especially lower back pain, the most common type of back problem. We will look at the lower spinal pain causes and identify some prevention methods.

Lower back pain causes:

1. Strain Back Muscles

Muscle strains in your lower back are quite common and can cause a lot pain. Strains can affect muscles and ligaments and can arise from many different activities. People with jobs that involve physical activity, especially lifting are a higher risk of suffering from this particular injury.

2. Nerve root compression

All nerves that run within our spinal cord have nerve roots and ending, many of which are in the lower back area. These nerve roots can become compressed and will result in a lot of pain. Several know back problems such as spinal stenosis, osteoporosis or the relatively common herniated disc can compress the nerve roots. Sciatica is a condition that comes from the nerve root being pinched and can not only affect your lower back but also your leg too.

3. Conditions that cause Spinal Deformities

Differing deformities of the spine can be some lower back pain causes that cause high levels of suffering. Conditions such as scoliosis, kyphosis and spondylolisthesis will result in the spine becoming deformed. While scoliosis and kyphosis cause the spine to curve more acutely than a normal spine, this can be very painful. Spondylolisthese is when one vertebrae slips forward in relation to the next vertebrae.

4. Degenerative disc disease

Although not as common as the above causes of back pain, there are many spinal deformities that can bring on lower pain. Causes such as scoliosis can result in extreme curvature of the spine and can be very painful.

5. Compression fractures.

Compression fractures are quite common and can result from several situations, however, a trauma or accident is the reason behind many compression fractures. People suffering from osteoporosis or cancer that has spread to the bone are also at risk to suffering from compression fractures.

6. Prolapsed disc

Pressure on the lower vertebrae can cause a rupture or bulge of one of the vertebral discs. The bulging disc tends to push cartilage towards the spinal cord nerves, pressing against them and causing intense pain.
