The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Coloring Gray Hair

By Hugh Dagenais

If you want to look younger, coloring gray hair can help. It will probably have more of an impact in improving your appearance than treatments such as Botox for wrinkles.

There is nothing new about hair dyeing. It is a tradition that dates back to and beyond the Pharaohs of Egypt. They were known to use extracts of henna and indigo for the coloration of their heavy tresses. For a long time products were only available to deepen tone. It was not until the discovery of bleaching with peroxide did there come about reliable methods for lightening.

Greying is a natural process that occurs as the body stops producing melanin. It typically begins at around the age of 30 years. It is a gradual process beginning with a few odd hairs here and there to patches often at the front of the head or around the temples. By the time a person is aged 50 the process is also 50% complete and 100% complete 10 to 15 years after that.

For those with a certain amount of confidence pulling off the silver look may work. Take for example the character of Miranda Priestly in the Devil Wears Prada movie. However, not all of us have the same kind of presence as Meryl Streep and a colorant is probably a safer often for achieving the desired glamour.

There are a few options to select from when it comes to coloring. If you want to experiment with different shades or even be entirely radical in your appearance for a while, you may choose a non permanent color. These do not penetrate the hair shaft and will rinse out after as little as two washes.

To avoid dyeing too frequently, you might choose a semi permanent colorant. Coverage will remain a bit longer than non permanent but will still wash out in time. You will have about a 6 or 7 washes window before you have to reapply. These are not as harsh as a permanent and give you some of the flexibility of a non permanent.

The advantage of permanents for coloring gray hair is that they are permanent. The color will remain there until it grows out. The disadvantage is that overuse can cause damage or undesired result. It makes sense to choose a color that you are going to stick with indefinitely after you reach a certain age to prevent overuse of permanent products. As such, you only need touch up roots as they show through and not subjecting the bulk of your hair to repeated treatments.
