Occupation therapy programs involve a well-trained therapist offering rehabilitative assistance to injured persons by turning their everyday routine into therapeutic activity. They also offer assistance to disabled children enabling them to continue their school and daily activity like their normal counterparts. This assists them in developing their self-esteem and their developmental skills. They also work with the aged persons who suffer from cognitive impairment lead normal lives.

These therapists address both the physical and mental or psychological well being of a person. This is achieved by studying a person and the surroundings they live in. A therapist needs to have a thorough understanding of their patient to know how best to offer treatment. Also involved are the persons living with the patients who need to be taught to make the whole treatment a success.

There is a basic guideline that most therapists follow whilst administering treatment. They include assessment, planning, intervention and lastly cooperation. These steps are further explained in detail to understand better.In assessment as the name suggests, a therapist carries out a detailed thorough assessment of a patient. They examine their daily work plan and how much it requires them to carry out their daily activity. An examination is also carried out to see the interaction of the patient with his or her roommates, family or assistants.

After assessment, then they sit down with the involved party and plan out a recovery plan. Planning is divided into short term goals which can easily be meet, or into ling term goals which require patience and exercise. Planning is normally in line with the activity of a person.

After assessing and planning, an intervention is carried out. This is where therapy is incorporated into a person depending on their lifestyles. They are taught how to incorporate therapy in their daily activities for example disabled children are taught how to act in schools, assisting them to accomplish what normal children do. This is also done to both injured and elderly patient to help those lead normal lives.

And lastly for all this to be successful, cooperation is required so as both therapist and patient work towards the same goal. Not only is cooperation important between patient and therapist but also from the caregivers and families. If the above steps are followed, ensures an all-round recovery of patients.

Therapist need to have a number of qualities to make their work easier. Such qualities include patience since recovery may be slow and also they need to be good at listening since a lot of their work involves listening to patients problems. Other qualities include good interpersonal skills and proper communication skills for easy communication. Also important is good writing skill.

Other than a good education, to carry out a successful occupation therapy programs, one most not only be qualified but possess attributes such as patience because one needs a lot of it to deal with chronic patients. Other attributes include being good listeners to listen to patients concerns and to offer viable solutions. Then proper interpersonal skills and communication skills are important to help in communicating with patients and also emphasize with them.
