The Advantages Of A Good Self Tanning Lotion

By Haywood Hunter

Most people know that self tanning lotion has been the product used to get a safer tan for many years. The formulas used have changed quite a bit. There are an endless number of formulas and different brands. The price range is broad as well.

In the 1920s German scientists stumbled onto the skin coloring effects of DHA, a white crystalline powder that attracts water molecules from the surrounding environment. This is now the main additive in self tanners. These scientists noticed after a spill that the substance turned the surface of the skin brown.

Years later a major manufacturer of sun tan products introduced the first overnight tanning agent. And a new option for achieving a sun tan was born. Many companies began introducing their own versions. All of these earlier products, however, left much to be desired.

The false orange hue was not what they were looking to achieve. Since then, the products have become more advanced. This is not to say that all products work well today. There are some, however, that do. They tend to be expensive. The amount of DHA contained in the lotion is the main thing to consider. This is because it is what determines the level of darkness one will achieve. A higher level will produce a darker tone.

More recently, one has an array of other options. Air brushing, spray tanning, injections and even permanent tattoos are being used more and more frequently. However, these methods don't offer the moisturizing effects that lotions do. Many people who have naturally fair skin feel that having darker skin is really important to their appearance.

Historically tanned skin was frowned upon as it was associated with a lower working class. Today, that is far from being the case. This is a huge market and highly profitable for suppliers. Fair skinned women are at the top of the list of consumers. But both women and men use tanning lotions. Whether it is to appear much darker or to just even out the skin tone, consumers want to be tan.

Those with naturally darker complexions are now using these products. Whether due to a desire to be even darker than they already are, or to even their skin tones, women of color are now tanning themselves. The golden shimmer that may be achieved from lotions containing a bronzer can enhance the exotic appearance that these women already possess. They also enjoy appearing to have a more even skin tone.

DHA is considered safe. Women who are pregnant are able to use self tanner without worrying about harmful effects to their babies. It is certainly safer than lying out in the sun and exposure to harmful rays. Some people rarely have an allergic reaction of the skin. Other than that, the only concern as far a safety would be to avoid the throat, nose, and eyes.

It is good that this option is available for tanning oneself. Some brands have better ratings than others. Reviews can be found online. Do your research and you should easily find a self tanning lotion that will work well for you.
