For the majority of our time here on earth, the human race has been dependent on natural remedies to keep it fit and well and control illness. Centuries ago, people discovered that a particular root could cure flu and that a herbal poultice put on to a wound would make it heal faster. This is just as true in this modern age. Almost every medical advance can be traced back to natural sources.

The natural world contains a wealth of wonders. Natural healers say that every single sickness has a natural remedy. It is simply a matter of seeing what it is. A dock leaf can cure a nettle sting; Italian and Greek farmers know that olive oil can make eczema much better; and we all know that an apple every day keeps the doctor away.

First of all,) a medicine highly regarded by American Indians, Evening Primrose was first brought into Europe in the Seventeenth Century. It became famous for its all-embracing properties and was taken up by celebrated English botanist John Goodyer, who named it "King's cure all". Today's uses for English Primrose tend to be more particular. Normally made into an oil, English Primrose is most often used for decreasing the pain and effects of Premenstrual Stress. Many people regard it as a general analgesic and sedative. A recent trial at North Western University concluded that Evening Primrose Oil acts much in the same way as many cancer drugs in fighting breast cancer. Other ailments that Evening Primrose was used to solve in older times include: breathing issues, eczema, problems with circulation, Multiple Sclerosis, heart problems, and high cholesterol.

Kava or Kava kava, latin name Piper methysticum, is mostly used around the Pacific Region as a type of common reviver. It is thought to create a mood of relaxation mixed in with exhilaration. Kava is relaxing whilst not interrupting mental clarity. Many adherents assert that kava is useful in the treatment of anxiety disorders, sleep loss, and linked nervous difficulties. What makes kava do what it does are called "kavalactones". Nearly twenty have been identified and they are all thought to be psychoactive. However, there is some concern that kava might cause damage to the liver. This has not been conclusively confirmed.

There is growing evidence that kava might cause damage to the liver. This has not been proved.

Some scientists say that kava could be responsible for damage to the liver of frequent users. There is no concrete evidence supporting this as we write.

The North American plant Saw Palmetto - Serenoa repens - is a traditional herbal remedy for problems of the urinary tract in men. Studies have revealed that the active part, extracted from the potent berries of the saw palmetto plant species, is a help treating benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH. This is simply a term for an enlarged prostrate. Someone suffering from this will feel the need to pee many times more than normal, not being able to start and having to get out of bed, in order to pass water. Some medical professionals have claimed that saw palmetto has approximately the same effect as a placebo on urinary problems, but personal experience, plus that of my father, finds to the contrary!

Valerian, or to give it its Latin name of Valeriana officinalis, has become a much admired alternative to sleeping drafts. It is a gentle and fast-acting aid to sleep that doesn't leave you feeling dopey the next day. It really does work and so ought not be consumed immediately before driving or working on heavy equipment.
